PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs Nintendo Switch — Which Console?

PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs Nintendo Switch compared on real eBay prices: libraries, disc vs digital, handhelds and bundles, all checked 30 Sep 2026.

Sony PlayStation 5 disc console 825GB in white

There has never been a more obvious right answer in console buying, which is exactly why this comparison still needs writing. The PS5, the Xbox Series X and the Nintendo Switch are three genuinely different products aimed at three different situations, and the mistake most people make is treating them as three answers to the same question. They are not. One is a power-and-exclusives machine, one is a value-and-subscription machine, and one is a portable that happens to plug into a television.

So, briefly: buy the PlayStation 5 if the games you want are PlayStation games, if a physical disc drive matters to you as much as the games themselves, or if you want the console with the largest catalogue of major single-player exclusives. Buy the Xbox Series X if you want the most console per dollar, if you play a lot of games that exist on PC as well, or if you are willing to add a subscription to unlock a much bigger library. Buy the Nintendo Switch if portability is a real requirement rather than a nice-to-have, or if your household includes people who will not sit at a screen all evening.

Every price in this guide was read from a live eBay listing on 30 September 2026. None are averages or historical lows. eBay prices change and vary by seller, condition and shipping, and used hardware in particular can move by a hundred dollars in a week. Where a listing describes a fault, we say so, because a $280 console with a stated problem is a different purchase from a $280 console that works.

One structural note before the details. The PS5 and the Xbox Series X are home consoles first. Neither has a handheld mode, neither is designed to be carried, and both assume a display within cable reach. The Switch is a handheld that docks. That single design fact explains more about the differences between these three than any specification sheet, and it is the one most buyers ignore until after they have paid.

Part 1

PlayStation 5: the exclusives and the disc drive

Sony's approach has been consistent for two generations: build one console, sell a disc and a digital version, and let the catalogue do the arguing. The current hardware is a 2020 design with a later slim revision, and both shapes appeared on eBay when we checked.

What real listings tell us about PS5 pricing

A was listed at $230, described as the 2020 disc model with 4K resolution, Blu-ray capability, 825GB of storage and Wi-Fi. A was listed at $202.50 and described as tested and functional, with visible cosmetic wear, dust and scratches, and one controller button described as slightly sticky but still working. A at $269.99 was listed with the power cable, and no controller mentioned.

At the top of the range, a was listed at $330 as fully functional, tested, updated and factory reset, with cosmetic wear described honestly rather than glossed over. That spread is the PS5 used market in miniature: roughly $200 for a working unit that needs cleaning, $230 to $270 for a tidy one, and $330 for a disc console with two controllers and a factory reset.

Anyone budgeting a PS5 in that range should also budget a controller, because several of the listings above are console-only. Treat a console-only listing as a $230 console, not a $230 complete system.

The disc drive question

The disc edition is the one to buy used, for a simple reason. A disc is a physical object you can hold, photograph and resell; a digital licence is tied to an account and is worth nothing to the next buyer. We saw the at $227.50 including a controller and cables, described as used-like-new, which is a fair price for a digital unit. It is also 1TB rather than 825GB, and the disc drive is the part most often broken on a used console, so digital is the cheaper repair risk only if you will never want a disc.

The saving is in the games. New-release physical pricing lands below the new-copy shelf price, which is the whole point of buying the model with a drive. An was listed at $22.95 on the day we checked. Buy the same title digitally and you are paying the full digital price for something you cannot lend to a friend.

What the PS5 is actually for

The upside: the catalogue of large single-player titles is the reason most people buy a PlayStation, and physical games make that catalogue cheap in the used market.

The downside: storage is the quiet problem. 825GB sounds generous until a single large install is 80GB and a library of fifteen is 1.2TB, at which point you are deleting games you have paid for. The PS5 is not the console to buy if you intend to keep everything forever, and a digital purchase makes that worse because you cannot resell to free the space.

Part 2

Xbox Series X and Series S: value and the subscription

Microsoft's current generation is two machines, not one, and the Series S is the interesting one. The Series X is a straightforward high-end box. The Series S is a smaller, cheaper, disc-free console that outputs 1440p rather than 4K. The reasoning behind both is the opposite of Sony's.

What real listings tell us about Xbox pricing

A was listed at $289, described as a 1TB console with 4K resolution and Wi-Fi. A at $285 carried the same 1TB and 4K UHD specification. At the lower end, a was listed at $144.50, described as tested and working, with marks, scuffs and dust from use, console only. That is a real spread, and the cheap one is cheap because the risk is higher, not because the console is worse.

The Series S listings show the same pattern. An was listed new at $150 with a power cord. A at $285 is priced on what comes in the box rather than on the console. A at $329.95 shows the 1TB models at a clear premium over the 512GB ones, and a at $325 was listed as new with the box opened but nothing removed.

Why the Series S matters

At $150 to $190 for a 512GB unit, the Series S is the cheapest current-generation console on this list by a wide margin, and for a lot of buyers it is the only one they need. It has no disc drive at all, so every game is a download, and it outputs 1440p rather than 4K. For a smaller television, a laptop screen or a second console in a bedroom, that is a very good trade. If your display is 4K and you sit close to it, the Series X is the one you want, and the price gap between the two is exactly the cost of a 4K picture and a disc drive.

What the Xbox is actually for

The upside: the Xbox advantage is not exclusives, it is the shape of the catalogue. Many Xbox and subscription titles also exist on PC, so a subscription stretches further than it would on a platform where a game exists nowhere else. It also means a used Xbox depreciates less painfully if you are not chasing a specific disc.

The downside: fewer reasons to own the box on the strength of hardware alone. Ask yourself honestly how many games you want are Xbox-only. If the honest answer is a handful, the PlayStation or the Switch serves you better.

Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED: the portable that also docks

The Switch is the odd one out, and it is odd in a way that makes it the easiest console to buy for the wrong reasons and the easiest to recommend for the right ones. The hardware has barely changed in concept since 2017: a tablet with detachable controllers that slides into a dock and becomes a living-room console.

What real listings tell us about Switch pricing

The Switch OLED sat in a narrow band when we checked. A was listed at $200 and described in unusual detail: console, Joy-Con controllers, Joy-Con straps, HDMI cable, dock, Joy-Con grip, AC adapter, a 64GB microSDXC card and the Zelda game, wiped and factory reset. A at $200 was described as lightly used with no Joy-Con drift, being sold because the owner upgraded. A at $147.50 included the dock, HDMI cable, AC adapter and case. A at $149.98 was listed as new, and a at $129.99 was the cheapest OLED unit we found.

The Switch Lite, which has no dock and cannot be played on a television, is cheaper again. A was listed at $135.49, with the seller explicitly asking buyers to check the photos for marks and scratches, and a at $136.21 was described as a grey system with 32GB of built-in storage. A Lite is a real saving on the console, but it is a real loss the moment anyone in the house wants to play on a TV.

Do not forget the memory card

Storage on a Switch is built in, which makes the microSD card a purchase rather than an accessory. An listing at $36 is a fair illustration of how the first-party pricing behaves, and it is why a Switch owner needs the card on day one. Budget for a at $54.99 rather than discovering the storage limit three games in.

What the Switch is actually for

The upside: Nintendo's first-party games are the reason to buy a Switch, and they are the strongest reason of the three in this article. A console at $150 running games nobody else can run is a fundamentally different proposition from a cheaper box with a large but interchangeable catalogue. Portability is not a feature here, it is the design.

The downside: the hardware is old enough that you should assume no third-party support, which is fine for a family console and not fine as a PC replacement. And if your taste runs to open-world action games with long loading times, this is the wrong machine.

Head to head: what actually differs

Main weaknessStorage pressure and the cost of skipping the disc driveFewer platform-exclusive reasons to own the boxNo modern third-party support and no upgrade path

Two things stand out from the price row. The first is that a Switch OLED and a used Xbox Series X occupy almost exactly the same budget, and they are the two least comparable purchases in this article. The second is that a PS5 disc console, at $202.50 to $270 for a working unit, sits remarkably close to a new Series S bundled with a controller and a headset. If your budget is $200 to $300 and you have not decided, you are choosing between three ecosystems rather than between three price tiers, which is a much better problem to have.

Part 5

Consoles bundled with monitors, and whether they are worth it

If you do not already own a display, a console-and-monitor bundle is the efficient way to do this, and there were three real ones on eBay when we checked.

A was listed at $425, and the description is the most useful thing in this section: a PS5 disc edition with 825GB storage, one Midnight Black controller, an Amzfast 27-inch curved 1080p monitor rated at 200Hz with built-in speakers, the original PS5 stand, all power cords, an HDMI cable and a controller charger cord. The console was factory reset, the vents and fan were deep-cleaned so it runs quiet and cool, and the seller ships in two boxes specifically to stop the screen breaking, with tracking for both. That is a working PS5, a controller and a 27-inch 200Hz monitor for $425, and the two-box shipping detail tells you the seller has done this before.

A was listed at $550 with the console and all cables, the curved monitor, a wireless controller, a wired illuminated controller, a headset and six games, naming UFC 3, Avengers, Call of Duty Cold War, Kingdom Hearts, Skate 3 and Halo. Six named games and two controllers for $550 is the best value per component in this article, and bundles like that appear when a retailer clears a display wall.

At the top, a was listed at $679.99, described as like-new and lightly used, including the console in Robot White, the original controller with rechargeable battery and dock, the original box, a 32-inch LG curved gaming monitor with power adapter, and the headset, all factory reset. That description is honest about the monitor being a curved 32-inch with high refresh rather than claiming a spec advantage, and it is the most complete package available.

The honest caveat on all three is the same. A bundle is priced as a discount against buying the parts, and the discount is real only if you needed the parts. A console with a monitor is only ever as good as its weakest component, and the monitor is invariably that component. If you already own a decent display, buy the console alone and put the difference into a controller and a game. If you own nothing, price the bundle against a standalone screen such as a at $148.05 that you would have picked anyway, because a bundled 1080p panel is not competitive with what the $250 to $400 tier buys on its own. Our 4K versus 144Hz versus ultrawide monitor guide covers how to make that call.

Part 6

Which console should you buy?

Buy the PS5 disc edition if the majority of the games on your list are PlayStation exclusives, if you intend to buy physical games, or if you plan to keep the console for years and want a library you can resell. The at $330 is the version to buy if you want everything in the box; the is the version to buy if you are happy to source a controller separately.

Buy the Xbox Series X if you play a lot of games that exist on PC as well, if you are considering a subscription, or if you want the most console for the least money and you already own a 4K television. The and the are the two ends of the same machine, and the gap between them is risk.

Buy the Xbox Series S if your display is 1080p or 1440p, if you game entirely through downloads, and if you want current-generation hardware for the least money. A is genuinely the cheapest route into this generation, and the shows what that budget buys when you are buying a package rather than a box.

Buy the Switch OLED if portability matters, if Nintendo's games are ones you actually want, or if the console will be shared across a household or travelling. The with dock, HDMI cable, adapter and case is the most complete listing in the Switch range, and you should add a at $54.99 on day one. If a television is never part of the picture, the is the honest choice.

Buy two of them if two people in your house play different genres, which is the most common real reason people end up with both a Switch and a PlayStation. Controller ecosystems do not match, which is why a exists at $78, and a at $9.89 is what makes a second console practical rather than theoretical.

How to buy any of these used

All prices in this comparison were confirmed on 30 September 2026 from live eBay listings. They are asking prices on one day, not averages, not historical lows and not predictions. eBay prices change and vary by seller, condition and shipping, and the used console market moves fast enough that a console priced at $202.50 on Monday can list at $250 by Thursday.

Four rules for buying any of these used. Ask for a photograph of the console powered on with a menu on screen, not a photo of the box, because the box is worth nothing to you. Check the model number before you pay, because the disc, digital and Series S variants look similar from a distance and differ substantially. Confirm whether a controller is included, because a large share of console-only listings are not, and a controller is real money on top of the console. And check the return window, which on used hardware is the difference between a $240 mistake and a $240 experiment.

For the wider picture across all three ecosystems, our gaming console and accessories deals roundup tracks the same listings day to day, and if you have already chosen a console and are now working out what to plug it into, the best gaming monitors under $300 roundup covers the displays that pair with all three. The bottom line is that the PS5 wins on games, the Xbox wins on value, and the Switch wins on everything you can do with it away from a television. Choose on the first criterion and the other two follow.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the PS5 or Xbox Series X better for most people?

It comes down to the games you already want. The PS5 has the wider set of big single-player exclusives, while the Xbox Series X has the better hardware value per dollar and a strong library when you add a subscription. Neither is a bad choice; buying the console your favourite games are on avoids paying for the same game twice.

Should I buy a disc or digital edition console?

A disc edition is safer if you buy used, because you can verify the disc is the real game rather than a licence, and you can resell or lend it later. A digital edition is smaller, often cheaper and has no moving parts to wear out, but the games are tied to your account. PS5 disc and digital units both appeared on eBay under $350 when we checked on 30 September 2026.

Is the Nintendo Switch OLED better than a PS5 or Xbox for portable gaming?

For portable play, yes, and by a wide margin. The Switch OLED is built to be picked up and carried, which is the one thing the PS5 and Xbox Series X cannot do at all. If you travel, play on a sofa away from a TV, or share a console with someone who is not always in the same room, that versatility is worth more than the power difference.

Is it worth buying a console and monitor bundle?

Sometimes. We found a PS5 with a 27-inch curved 200Hz monitor at $425, an Xbox Series X with a curved Samsung monitor at $550, and an Xbox Series X digital bundle with a 32-inch LG monitor and headset at $679.99. The saving is real only if you needed a display anyway, and the bundle warranty is never better than the weakest part's.

How much should a PS5, Xbox or Switch cost on the used market?

Prices confirmed 30 September 2026 put PS5 disc consoles from about $202 to $330, Xbox Series X around $144 to $289 depending on condition, Xbox Series S from about $150 to $330 depending on storage, and Switch OLED systems from about $129 to $200. eBay prices change and vary by seller and condition, so treat these as the day's asking prices.
